13th December 1937

Japanese troops today took Nanking, the capital of China.  The government has moved out to Wuhan, where Chiang Kai-shek is planning further defenses.  After Shanghai fell, it was only a matter of time until Nanking went as well.  Over a million people have fled Nanking, but 500,000 remain.

The Japanese are under orders to punish the Chinese for the resistance they put up.  Reports of wide scale murder and mass rape are coming in, with prisoners being used for bayonet practice and Japanese officers becoming weary from beheading so many people.  The Japanese haven’t been known for treating wither prisoners or civilian populations well after subjugating an area, but this appears to be a dark chapter, even for the Japanese.
